Born in Adigeni, Georgia, Tedo Rekhviashvili is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the tension between memory, metaphysics, and material form, with the human figure positioned as a central site of psychological and philosophical inquiry.
He received his artistic training at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, completing both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in graphics and printmaking through full academic and governmental scholarships. Rekhviashvili later earned his MFA from the New York Academy of Art as a full academy scholar, where his practice expanded within an international context and a rigorous figurative tradition. Working primarily in painting while drawing from a strong foundation in printmaking, Rekhviashvili demonstrates a heightened sensitivity to surface, structure, and restraint. His figures often appear suspended or exposed, built through layered compositions and controlled gestures that explore vulnerability, power, and the passage of time through the body. Rooted in lived experience shaped by movement between rural Georgia and urban New York, his work allows memory to function as an atmospheric condition rather than a linear narrative. Subtle personal symbols and recurring motifs emerge quietly within his compositions, creating layered spaces where past and present coexist. Drawing from Eastern philosophy and Georgian cultural references, Rekhviashvili’s practice positions figuration as a vessel for poetic and metaphysical reflection. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Sotheby’s and during the 59th Venice Biennale, and is held in institutional and private collections across Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.
