Born in 1975 in Batumi, Georgia, Giorgi Mekvabishvili is a minimalist painter whose practice is defined by a quiet, sustained movement away from depiction toward essence.

His artistic path has unfolded through gradual discovery rather than abrupt shifts. A formative moment occurred during a visit to the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, where an encounter with early modernist fresco painting revealed the expressive potential of restraint. There, Mekvabishvili recognized that emotion could emerge through light, balance, and reduction, rather than through intensity or overt gesture.

This realization became the foundation of his ongoing search for a visual language that is both reduced and rooted. His work speaks through silence, yet remains deeply connected to Georgian culture, everyday life, and tradition. Rather than narrating or illustrating, his paintings invite contemplation, allowing form and atmosphere to carry meaning.

Mekvabishvili’s compositions distill natural and familiar elements to their essential lines and tonal relationships. Through a restrained palette and measured structure, surface, color, and form intertwine with clarity and calm. His practice reflects an enduring commitment to simplicity as a mode of perception—where minimal means open space for reflection and presence.
